In the realm of interior design or decorating, achieving a cohesive look throughout your home can be a delicate balancing act. While you want each space to have its own unique charm and personality, you also strive for a sense of unity that ties everything together. One effective way to accomplish this is by connecting spaces through common elements such as color, design, and texture.
Embracing Cohesion without Compromise
When it comes to interior design, cohesion doesn’t mean sacrificing diversity. Instead, it’s about finding the perfect balance between consistency and creativity. By giving spaces in your home something in common – whether it’s a color palette, design motif, or texture – you can achieve a sense of continuity that flows seamlessly from room to room, without falling into the trap of being too matchy-matchy.
The Power of Recurring Motifs
In our own home, we embraced this philosophy wholeheartedly. In our snug, we opted for a dark green tropical wallpaper to evoke the ambiance of a Cuban cigar lounge – moody, cozy, and full of character. This wallpaper also served as the cornerstone, allowing us to bring together furniture that we had previously owned and wanted to keep, such as our red Barcelona chairs and wood bookcases and end tables. Contrasting prints, like those found on our Victorian lampshade designed by Laura Beirne, added depth to the space, while a thoughtful mix of plants make you feel like you are sipping a piña colada in the sun.
We continued the snug’s wallpaper theme throughout our home by adding small jungle or animal elements in each room, to remind, but not overwhelm. For instance, in the bedroom, we opted for dark, tropical print bedding, a Tibetan tiger pillow and more greenery to create a tranquil oasis. A ponytail palm in the office is reminiscent of the same, as well as a few decorative items in the kitchen, which features a tropical print serving tray, hanging plants & herbs in pretty gold planters, and a Jonathan Adler snake runner.
In our living room, a different color palette doesn’t detract from the overall cohesion. Instead, a peach palm tree print, vintage lampshade and bronze palm candle holders echo the theme, creating a sense of harmony despite the contrasting hues.
Finding Harmony in Diversity
In addition to the fun, tropical elements, we used gold accents throughout, adding a touch of luxury to every room, while deep green or blue furniture and decor in various textures – think plush fabrics and rich upholstery – add depth and visual interest, as well as additional cohesive visual language that ties everything together.
Recurring motifs in various rooms bring cohesion, while contrasting patterns and textures provide allure and complexity in each space maintaining diversity. For instance, black and white striped planters contrasting the tropical prints, also serve as subtle reminders of the modern night stands in the bedroom. Black & white decorative pillows and cozy throws strewn on various seating allow this theme to have cohesion as well.
Thoughtful Details Make All the Difference
Even the smallest details can contribute to the cohesive design narrative. The Victorian lampshade in the snug brings in another pattern, but this time in a similar color palette. A decorative pillow on an antique cream chair with button tufting in the living room shares the same pattern as the lampshade in the snug, but with a different color scheme. Matching coasters serve as a final touch, reinforcing the interconnectedness of each space and tying everything together in a seamless tapestry of style and substance.
Bringing it All Together
Connecting spaces in your home through shared elements like color, design, and texture is a powerful way to create a cohesive living environment that reflects your unique personality and style. By embracing diversity within the overarching theme and paying attention to thoughtful details, you can transform your home into a sanctuary that’s as beautiful as it is harmonious.
